Work for the homeless

COLCHESTER EXPRESS - 11TH MARCH 2002

Homeless people are to be given the chance to work – handing out information on unemployment payment protection insurance for homeowners.

And the unusual initiative has been given the thumbs-up by chiefs at the Salvation Army.

Under the project, Essex insurance company Burgesses will pay homeless people £25 a day for handing out leaflets about the new unemployment insurance at Colchester train station.

The workers will also receive ten per cent of all premiums.

Registered homeless charities will be given a boost under the scheme as they will receive ten per cent of all commissions retained by Burgesses.

Around 25 homeless people have so far been recruited by the company after Burgesses managing partner Simon Burgess, of Braintree, visited drop-in centres.

Mr Burgess said homeless people would distribute leaflets about unemployment payment protection insurance for homeowners at Colchester, Witham and Chelmsford railway stations.
