Gay mortgage cover from Burgesses

RETAIL FINANCE DIRECT - 29TH JUNE 2002

Insurance sales company Burgesses has introduced a new mortgage payment protection insurance policy offering cover against illness, accident and unemployment. The new product, called Equality, is aimed at gay men.

Equality is being promoted through gay social clubs located in the London, Brighton and Edinburgh areas with leaflets being placed in bars. Other marketing activities include leaflets situated in telephone boxes and mail shots to lists provided by specialist trade associations.

Those interested can ring Burgesses’ London office for a brochure with application form. Customers can arrange the policy over the telephone.

The cover will provide a homeowner with a maximum of £2,500 a month to cover their household bills for a period of 12 months. The monthly premium to cover an £800-a-month mortgage repayment would be £30.

Burgesses managing director Simon Burgess said that the policy was non-discriminatory and could be taken out by an individual or a couple. Equality also provided income payment protection insurance in the event of a policyholder getting a sexually transmitted disease such as HIV, Aids or Hepatitis B.

Equality is underwritten by Lloyd’s, and Burgesses claims it meets the Association of British Insurers’ and Council of Mortgage Lenders’ baseline standard for mortgage payment protection insurance policies.
