And we call as our first witness the Angel Gabriel

THE MAIL ON SUNDAY - 29TH APRIL 2007

Nuns anxious about immaculate conception are about to feature in a trademark dispute involving two rival insurers.

The clash between payment protection cover provider British Insurance and cricket sponsor Brit Insurance will be thrashed out at a court hearing on May 16 that will decide which is allowed to use the patriotic title.

British Insurance announced as an April Fool that it would sell Pounds 100 policies to nuns to cover the cost of bringing up Jesus Christ in the event they were impregnated by God.

The humour, however, was lost on Brit Insurance's company secretary Peter Goddard, who said such eccentric 'policies' would damage his company's reputation.

Calling Brit ' arrogant', Simon Burgess, managing director of British Insurance, told Gadfly that in 2005 he received permission to call the firm 'British' from the then Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson.

Burgess says Brit had no trouble promoting the fact it won a 'British Insurance Award', without objecting to the name.

Brit claims its opponent's name is too similar to its own, but the name doesn't have anything to do with nationality it was adopted in 1999 as an acronym of Benfield & Rea Investment Trust.
