Traditional home insurance policies will often not cover your property if it is left unoccupied for extended periods, usually more than 30 days.
If you expect your property to be vacant for a lengthy period, you should consider a specialist unoccupied property insurance policy to make sure you have the right cover.
Your home may be left unoccupied if it is pending sale, undergoing renovations or awaiting probate. In such circumstances you may be unsure how long your property will be empty so you may wish to take out a shorter term policy to avoid having to pay a cancellation fee on a 12 month policy. Cover is available for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months so you can take out a policy that suits your needs.
Please note, vacant properties must not be boarded up and be in a good state of repair to be eligible for cover and all windows and doors must be secured with approved locks.
If the property you need to insure is a second home or holiday home, you should consider specialist holiday home insurance.
Please ensure you check the policy wording for full details of cover and exclusions.
